What you will learn... The NZ Certificate in first aid provides the same content as the foundation course, however builds on skills and knowledge gained on the first day and gives more opportunity to practice skills learnt. It takes a minimum of 12 hours teaching and assessment but homework is also expected. -Gain the confidence to act when faced with minor injuries, through to life threatening emergency situations and manage multiple casualties. -Practice first aid and basic life support techniques in a safe and supportive environment -Learn valuable knowledge and skills for life

What topics are covered? 6400- Manage first aid in an emergency situation Assess two major injuries from •Burns- chemical or electrical •Major wounds- eg. gunshot, impalement, stabbing, crush injuries, amputations, head injuries, suspected spinal injuries, internal injuries, Assess one medical condition from: •severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), cold emergency, heat emergency 6401- Provide first aid Topics covered: Methods for patient assessment and treatment for: Medical conditions such as • Heart attack • Stroke / CVA • Seizure • Diabetes (type 1 &2) • Asthma Trauma such as • Wounds • Sprains & Strains • Soft Tissue Injury • Fractures / bone injury, • Burns • Common poisons and poisoning • The contents of First Aid Kit and their use / basic dressings / bandaging & more. 6402 - Provide basic life support Topics covered: • Primary survey (DRSABCD) •Risks and hazards. • Infection control/Cross infection / blood borne pathogens (Hepatitis, H.I.V. etc.) • Accessing help in an emergency. • Basic Life Support (CPR) to NZ Resuscitation Council Standard for an Adult, Child and Infant. Safety. • Manage a foreign body airway obstruction for an Adult, Child and Infant. • A.E.D training and demonstration for adult, child and infant. • Provide first aid management for a person in shock • Manage bleeding in a life threatening situation. Pre requisites: • Must have completed unit standards 6401 and 6402 •Learners must be able to kneel to demonstrate CPR technique.
